The reverse has the inscription “An Fórsa Cósanta Áitiúil ” this being Gaelic for the “Local Defence Force” known during the Emergency as the “LDF” The medal suspension bar is maker marked “Quinn” This was the Dublin based company that made badges for the Irish volunteers in pre -Free State times.
The LDF was a wartime creation having been established in 1941 on a regional basis. It was designed to provide military armed defence and acted as a support to the regular army.
