Description

This bronze medal which measures about 38mms in diameter was designed to commemorate the naval action off Tory Island in 1798 by Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren (1753-1822).

Obverse: The uniformed bust of Sir J.B. Warren, and the wording ‘SR . J. B. WARREN BARONET. K . B.’ and below the bust is the additional wording
‘THE LORD OF HOSTS IS WITH US.’
The reverse: shows a running fight between a British and French battle ship, the latter (French) ship is partially dismasted.

The written reference on the reverse reads

‘THE SISTER COUNTRY AGAIN RESCUED FROM INVASION.’ and ‘BREST SQUADRON DEFEATD. OFF TORY ISLAND OCTOBER . 12 . 1798 .’

This is a fascinating momento celebrating the defeat of the French by the British navy during the action at Lough Swilly at the time of the 1798 Irish Rebellion.
