The helmet plate that once was attached to the front of this helmet has been long since removed. This could be re-fitted with any other appropriate Victorian plate of officer quality. For all you Irish Regimental enthusiasts, this helmet would be appropriate for an officer’s helmet plate to the Leinster Regiment, Connaught Rangers or the Royal Irish Regiment to be fitted to this officer’s blue cloth helmet.
The helmet is in very good condition. The blue cloth covered cork skull, is solid with no damage to it what so ever. All the brass furniture including the side bosses, cruciform top and spike are all original to the helmet. The heavy brass linked chain is not original to the helmet, but a good quality addition none the less.
There is on original, old label on the internal liner named to a “H. J (or I) Russell”.
This is a great piece of original Victorian military head dress which would make a very useful addition to any Victorian military collection.
