Description

This is the first and only time I’ve ever come across or known of a button that was produced here in Dublin for the Royal Visit of George the Fourth to Ireland in 1821.
The king landed in Howth for the start of his 18 day visit on 12 August 1821. This proved to be a great occasion in Ireland and no expense was spared to welcome King George on his royal visit.

This button was obviously produced to commemorate the visit. It measures just a little under 23mms in diameter. It has a beautiful coppery golden colour. It is in superb condition.

The centre of the button has the royal “G iv R” and the date 1821. It is also nice to see some Gaelic there with the Irish greeting – Cead Mile Fáilte – a hundred thousand welcomes -.

This button is make marked to reverse – “MURPHY 110 BRIDE STREET DUBLIN”

This is a circular flat backed button with shank firm and secure at back.

Clearly this particular item is worthy of a great deal more research, who was it produced for, was it worn by Irish officials, made available to the public ? A fascinating memento of the royal visit of 1821.
