Description
This is a real once off ! A fantastic piece of needle work on a lovely blue silk background. This piece was produced, most probably in Egypt in 1917 as a souvenir for the regiment’s service there in 1917. Please take a look at the images to see exactly what is on the silk.
We can conclude that this item was produced as a souvenir for someone in the 5th (Service) Battalion of the Connaught Rangers, a part of the 10th (Irish) Division when stationed in Egypt in 1917. The 5th Battalion, the Connaught Rangers arrived in Alexandria in September 1917 having come from their deployment in Salonika. Prior to Salonika, the 5th Battalion had served in Gallipoli. While in Egypt they were involved in some serious action including fighting around Beersheba and the town of Gaza.
The silk measures approx 45cms x 42cms. Considering its age and that it is needle work on silk, it still retains excellent colours. Condiction is very good, though it does have some rips and folds. Please take a look at the images.
