Description
This is a nice helmet with a good, solid shell. Many of the Irish Vickers helmets are dented but in this case, the shell shows only a few very minor indentations and looks very well. The helmet skull was at one time re-painted a green colour. This was tastefully done and while not original, it does look well. There is a black gloss paint on the inside of the skull. Externally you will note that the rivets retaining the internal leather lining has had what appears to be contemporary repairs done, probably to re-secure the liner.
The internal liner is in very good and the leather is in soft condition. What makes the liner particurarlty attractive is an original 5 digit number which is the army number of the original wearer of this piece before these helmets were taken out of service in 1939. The liner is also nicely stampted with the original liner maufacturer of T. Smith & Son Dublin 1927. The horsehair padding is no longer present in the pad holders. I’ve replaced them with sponge which works quite well for display.
The usual Vickers stamp and number/date is also on the inner neck of the helmet skull. This is difficult to read however due to the paint.
This is a good example of a scarce Irish M27 helmet that could benefit from sme additional resoration and TLC.
