This is a cap badge that at one time was worn by members of the Gardaí on their peaked caps. It is known as a second pattern due to a variation in spelling.
On original Garda cap badges produced for the Irish police service after independence in 1922 the word “SAIOCÁNA” which means to “guardians of the peace” is spelled with an older Gaelic spelling which included a “T” ie “SIOTCÁNA”
The badge on offer here is without the “T” suggesting that the badge dates something after the 1940’s.
The badge is in excellent condition and guarateed original.
This is a chromed badge, they also appear in a duller white meatal version.
