Description

This is a poignant photograph comprising members of the 33rd Battalion who served in the Congo in 1960.  Several of those in the picture were killed in the Niemba Ambush on 8th November 1960.  The officer, seated in the centre of the group is Lieut. Kevin Gleeson, who was one of the soldiers who died in the ambush.

The photograph is postcard sized and is mounted on a carboard. Please take a look at the images to judge the quailtiy of the photograph, it has several cracks but is held secrely on the cardboard.

When I acquired this photograph it was accompanied by an United Nations medal and ribbon, being the first type issued for U.N service in the Belgian Congo.  Unfortunately, the CONGO clasp is missing from the medal but you can see the holes where it had been mounted on the original ribbon.

This would be  a lovely set to restore and a worthy piece of Irish U.N. service to collect, restore, display and research.
