Description
This is an original armband or brassard belonging to a member of the G.R.s (Volunteer Training Corps). The Volunteer Training Corps was a militia type body of mainly professional men who were over the military age for enlistment. During the 1916 Rising in Dublin, the GR’s were fired upon while returning to Beggres Bush Barracks having been on manoeuvres in the Dublin mountains that day. Several of the men were wounded and and six killed. This event took place on Monday, 24th April, the first day of the Rising.
This armband is in very good condition. It has a few small moth holes.
This example is marked “Will Edwards” in black ink on reverse. I’ve done some basic reserach on “William Edwards”. There’s about 3/4 gentlmen with that name recorded on the 1911 census living in Dublin, that fit the age profile of being in the 40’s – 50’s age bracket. The nomonal roll of officers and men of the 1st Battalion, Associated Volunteer Training Corps who were involved in the Defence of Begger’s Bush Barracks does not list a W. Edwards, so more research needs to be done on the original owner of this armband/brassard.
