The South of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry existed for only eight years between 1902 and 1908.

In 1908, the S.I.Y. was reformed as the South Irish Horse, and in 1917 the S.I.H became the 7th Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment. The unit was disbanded in 1922.
